For the first time, the Cal State East Bay Art Department is inviting student photographers from all East Bay colleges and art schools to submit entries in a juried exhibition.

“Best of the Bay Area – A Juried Exhibition of Student Photography,” with as many as 60 images, is being organized by Scott Hopkins, associate professor of art, and judged by Deborah Klochko, director of the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego. Klochko has more than 25 years of experience as a photography museum educator, director and curator.

“This will be a very important show and should bring considerable attention to our students and the Art Department,” said Hopkins.

Also this fall, the Theatre and Dance Department will debut two contemporary performances. One is a look at Socrates’ Greek Tragedy, “Antigone,” by playwright Nambi Kelley, the other a musical loosely based on Charles Dickens’ holiday classic, "A Christmas Carol." Additionally, the Music Department will collaborate with the Mid-Peninsula Recorder Orchestra for its annual Winter Gala.

Art Gallery, music, and theatre and dance shows and performances for fall include:

• Jazz Masterclass, led by Saxophonist Teodross Avery, is set for Oct. 5, at 7 p.m. in the Music Building (MB) 1055. Free admission.

• 黑料福利网 Wind Symphony, Wesley J. Broadnax, conductor, performs Oct. 26, at 7:30 p.m. in the University Theatre. Admission will be $7 general, $5 for youth, seniors and alumni, and free with a 黑料福利网 ID.

• Best of the Bay Area – A Juried Exhibition of Student Photography will open Nov. 2 at a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. in the University Art Gallery in the Art & Education Building. The exhibition will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays; 6 to 9 p.m. Fridays; and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays through Dec. 2. Admission is free.

• A faculty recital by Pamela Hicks, soprano, and Buddy James and Allen Shearer, baritones, with Jeffrey Sykes on the piano, is set for Nov. 2 at noon in MB 1055. Admission is free.

• A Jazz Masterclass by the Eric Jekabson Quartet will be presented at Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. in MB 1055. Admission is free.

• The 24th Annual Instrumental Music Festival Concert with Wesley J. Broadnax, conductor, will be presented Nov. 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the University Theatre. Admission will be $7 general, $5 for youth, seniors and alumni, and free to those with a 黑料福利网 ID.

• “Xtigone,” a new play from the contemporary playwright Nambi Kelley, based on the ancient Greek Tragedy Antigone by Socrates, with Darryl V. Jones, director, performs Nov. 12, 13, 19 and 20 at 8 p.m. and Nov. 21 at 2 p.m. in the University Theatre. Admission will be $15 general, $10 for youth, seniors and alumni, and $5 with 黑料福利网 ID.

• The 黑料福利网 Wind Symphony and Diablo Wind Symphony, Wesley J. Broadnax and John Maltester, conductors, and Nina Haft, choreographer, with the 黑料福利网 Dance Ensemble, performs Nov. 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the University Theatre. Admission will be $7 general, $5 for youth, seniors and alumni, and free with a 黑料福利网 ID.

• The Percussion Ensemble, with Arthur Storch conducting, performs Nov. 30 at noon in MB 1039. Admission is free.

• The Jazz Fall Concert, featuring the 黑料福利网 Jazz Orchestra and Latin Jazz Ensemble and the Los Medanos College Jazz Ensemble, Johannes Walmann and Michael Zilber, directors, performs Nov. 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the University Theatre. Admission will be $7 general, $5 for youth, seniors and alumni, and free with a 黑料福利网 ID.

• A Symphony Orchestra Concert, Wesley J. Broadnax, conductor, performs Dec. 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the University Theatre. Admission will be $7 general, $5 for youth, seniors and alumni, and free with a 黑料福利网 ID.

• Ice, an extravanganza of dance and music, with Nina Haft producing, will be composed of three programs. Program A performs Dec. 3, at 7 p.m., program B Dec. 4 at 4 p.m., and program C Dec. 4 at 8 p.m., all in the Dance Studio (PE 140). Admission will be $5 general, or $3 with 黑料福利网 ID.

• The Winter Gala, with the East Bay Singers, Oratorio Society, and Jazz Singers, and the Mid-Peninsula Recorder Orchestra, Buddy James and Frederic Palmer, conductors, performs Dec. 3 at 7:30 p.m. at All Saints Catholic Church, 22824 Second Street, Hayward. Admission will be $7 general, $5 for youth, seniors and alumni, and free with a 黑料福利网.

• Scroogie: A Modern Musical Carol loosely based on Charles Dickens’ holiday classic, with A. Fajilan, director, and Darryl V. Jones, composer and co-director, performs Dec. 10 at 8 p.m. and Dec. 11 at 3 and 7 p.m. in the University Theatre. Admission will be $12 general, $6 for youth, seniors and alumni, $5 for children and those with 黑料福利网 ID, and $25 for a family (two adults and two children).
