SLHS Milestones

  • 1970 - department was founded by Bill Rosenthal, Robert A. Veder, and Rhoda Agin (all emeritus faculty)
    1976 - the onsite speech clinic was established

    2014 - the clinic is renamed the Norma S and Ray R Rees clinic after Dr. Norma Rees in recognition of her leadership and contributions to the field.
    Dr. Rees was President of CSU East Bay from 1990-2006
  • 1996 - Aphasia Treatment Program is started by Jan Avent  
    2009 - choir developed by Ellen Bernstein-Ellis 
    2012 - First choir performs at California Speech Language Hearing Association 
    2013 - Choir performs in Yosemite at launch of the 1st aphasia-friendly NPS brochure
    2017 - ATP is selected as Program of the Year by California Speech Language Hearing Association
  • 1972 - seven students receive a B.S. in Speech Pathology and Audiology
    1983 - six students receive a M.S. in Speech Pathology and Audiology
  • Summer 2017 - Pioneer Pals is started by Dr. Shubha Kasinath
  • 2018 - Clinic research with Ellen Bernstein-Ellis
    2020/2021 - Life-Long Activity through Movement for Aphasia (LLAMA) collaboration begins with SLHS and Kinesiology 
    2023 - LLAMA received the 2023 American Kinesiology Association's Diversity Equity and Inclusion Student Impact Award
  • 2019 - Project ASPIRE personnel preparation grant begins - provides funding and additional training in autism to graduate students in SLHS and Special Education 
    2021 - Project LISTEN with AAC personnel preparation grant begins - provides funding and additional training in Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) to graduate students in SLHS and Special Education
